Hearings & calendar

Schedule court dates, add prep notes, and reduce last-minute surprises.

A hearing is a listed date for a matter court appearance, board listing, or other fixed event your team must prepare for. Joshira keeps hearings attached to the case and visible on the calendar.

Add a hearing

You can start from either place:

  • From the case → add a hearing, or
  • From Hearings / Calendar → create and link the matter

Fill in at least:

  1. Date and time (and timezone if your team works across cities)
  2. Court / forum and courtroom or board if known
  3. Purpose in plain words (e.g. “Bail application,” “Arguments,” “For orders”)
  4. Short prep notes the morning team needs

Save. The hearing should appear on the matter and on the calendar views (month, week, day, or agenda).

Prep notes that actually help

Write for the person who may cover for you. Useful notes include:

  • What was last ordered or directed
  • Papers that must be carried
  • Who is arguing / instructing
  • Client attendance expected or not
  • Open risks (“opposite counsel may press for adjournment”)

Avoid notes that only say “Important.”

Reminders

Turn on reminders so a listing does not depend on one person’s memory or personal phone calendar alone. Reminders are especially useful when several associates share a board.

Hearing week rhythm

Many desks review the next 7–14 days every morning. Use Agenda or Week view, confirm owners, and check that documents for those listings are on the case not only in email.

After the hearing

As soon as practical:

  1. Update the case with what happened (short note).
  2. Record the next date if one was fixed.
  3. Upload any new order or filing to Documents.
  4. Adjust case status if the matter moved (e.g. reserved for orders, settled, closed).

Tips for busy boards

  • Prefer one hearing record per listing rather than burying dates in free-text notes
  • If a date is adjourned, update the existing hearing or add the new date clearly
  • Keep court name spelling consistent so filters stay useful

Next: keep filings with the matter in Documents.
